Monel 400 is a nickel-copper solid solution alloy that can be cold worked with niobium and is resistant to a wide range of corrosive conditions.
It has a low corrosion rate in fast-moving salt or seawater and has good resistance to corrosion cracking in most freshwaters.
Monel 400 is exceptionally resistant to hot seawater and steam, salt and caustic solutions, and degassed amino acids and hydrofluoric acid. In addition to corrosion resistance, Monel 400 has excellent mechanical properties at sub-zero temperatures and can withstand temperatures up to 1000oF (1832oC). It is most commonly used in environments ranging from oxidizing to neutral and moderately reducing. Its resistance to a wide range of corrosive conditions also makes it widely used in marine applications and other non-oxidizing chloride solutions. Monel 400 is weak at annealing temperatures; therefore, various tempering treatments are used to increase its strength.
